Engaging the Mexican public through film towards better health with support from WHO’s HAFF
26 October 2023
Mexico City, Mexico
The WHO’s Health for All Film Festival (HAFF) is partnering with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) to screen a series of films and short films “Cinema and Health” at the “Linterna Mágica” cinema in Mexico City from October 24 to 27.
After the screening event on 6 October in Copenhagen, Denmark, of HAFF’s short films on Mental Health, and several other similar national or local events in 2022, this action by WHO’s country office in Mexico and WHO’s regional office for the Americas, is another demonstration that HAFF contributes more and more to health promotion through film in various national occasions.
An opening ceremony will be held on 24 October with the Director of the Pan American Health Organization, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, and high authorities from the health and cultural sectors of Mexico.
In this screening cycle, a selection of 11 short films on health issues in the Americas, nominated for the “WHO Health for All” Film Festival (see detailed list below), will be complemented by films made by Mexican directors that deal with various topics related to health and welfare. During the four days of the cycle there will be presentations by directors, question and answer sessions with experts, and debates; promoting conversation, proposals, and actions to engage the general public through cinema towards better health.
The cycle meets the objective of the IMSS associated with the reopening of the Linterna Mágica cinema: to broadcast short films, author and cult films, and have activities for film education, promoting health through cultural activities.
